Writerly Gift Guide and a Giveaway!

writerly gift guide

Hey everybody, the holiday season is upon us. I know if you’re anything like me, you may be stuck on a gift for someone. Never fear, I’m here to help you out. I made a writerly gift guide last year and the 2013 gift guide. Why break tradition? Stick around until the end and enter to win some a Book Depository gift card and much more!

Last week, our #writestuff tweetchat topic was “T’is the season.” We talked about all kinds of things that we as writers would love to receive and what would make things easier for us.

I thought I’d compile some of the answers from that to give you some extra ideas for gifts for the writer in your life.

One thing I realized, all of us had a go-to drink that we like for our writing. Many said coffee,

go-to drink 2

But not everyone.

go-to drink 1

I would suggest going the old fashion route and making a gift basket. You can add a cute mug, beverages of choice, preferred snack, pens, etc that your writer would need at the desk. It would be a go-to present.

Another we’re all short of is time.

time saver

If you’re short on case, but have time to give, make some redeemable gift cards. Depending on your writer, you could use:

  • Will babysit for two hours so you can write.
  • Help you with household chores for one day
  •  Will puppy sit so you can go to coffee shop for a writing day.
  • Will listen to you gripe about your editing/characters/stupid editor etc.

You get it. You can design them on Picmonkey and/or Canva for free and make them look really cute. I’d think printing them out would be best, but in a pinch, you could send them as attachments.

Some other ideas that didn’t come from the chat.

writer's necklace

This necklace is so cute and would be perfect for the writer who is still working toward that dream. It’s from the IntuitiveJewellery Etsy shop.

write epic shit

Isn’t this what we all want to do? If the writer in your life likes her art a little salty, this wall hanging would be absolutely perfect. Created by keilo on Etsy.

handmade journal

Does your writer love to collect journals? This one is a handmade personally engraved journal. Burgundy, pure leather and absolutely gorgeous. Created by MemoriesMadeCustom on Etsy.

the_mind_of_a_writer_tshirtDoes your writer have a sense of humor? This “The Mind of a Writer” T-shirt designed by Belinda Yandell on CafePress  could be the perfect gift.

It reads: The mind of a writer can be a truly terrifying thing: Isolated neurotic caffeine-addled crippled by procrastination and consumed by feelings of panic, self-loathing, & soul-crushing inadequacy. And that’s on good day.

Noise cancelling headphones is a big on writers’ wish lists as well. I am by no means a techie, so I’d suggest checking out a few lists like:

15 Best Noise Cancelling Headphones in 2015 by Headphone Addicts

Best noise-canceling headphones of 2015 by CNET

Personally, when I buy tech, I do too much research. This will give you a nice start.

You’re writer is probably a reader as well. Here’s a few books on the craft. Stephen King’s On Writing is always a favorite. I’ve been told that Bird by Bird: Instructions on Writing and Life by Anne Lamott is a solid read. I wouldn’t know yet. I just ordered my copy last week. Then if maybe the person is struggling with some fundamentals: The Elements of Style by Struck and White. This one sits on my desk, right beside my laptop. FYI: These links to books are affiliate links and I will receive a small commission if you order from there.

If the person on your list is looking more for bookish presents, I have a video I made today on my channel that can give you some hints. Also, tomorrow is my BookTube anniversary, last month I reached 500+ subscribers on my channel, and Sunday was my birthday. All these powers combined made me really want to give some stuff away. Check out the video and the giveaway is right below.

Gift guide: Presents for the writer in your life

http://penpaperpad.com

Shopping for that special writer does not have to be hard. I’ve got some tips for you.

Unless you have a spare 10 hours per day, an unlimited supply of coffee and/or wine and a computer that never has issues (Every computer I’ve ever owned, I’m looking at you.), it’s hard to find the perfect gift for the writer in your life. Don’t fret my pet, I’m here to help ease you through it with my Gift Guide for the writer in your life.

First recognize that you may have to do a little detective work. Is your writer a techno freak, and is all about the latest gadgets? Or are you dealing with an luddite who would rather use a chisel out words on a stone tablet than a Ipad? Then you go from there.

If your friend is more a bit of a throwback, then try some of these ideas:

For the Back to Basics Writer:

  • A sexy moleskin journal: Who doesn’t want to dip their ink in that, amirite?
  •  If they have prefer typewriter to computer, then a care package of type ribbons, erase tape and even a gift card for repairs may be in order.
  • A lovely cup/drink set: If your friend is a wine and jazz writer try a set of wine glasses and a bottle of his favorite wine. If she’s more into coffee a cool mug and a different flavors of coffee, or a thermos and a Starbucks card. Tea drinker? You can find many lovely teas in pretty tins and pair that with a cup as well.
  • A Writer’s Market: This book is so chock-full of useful information, whether it’s how to write query letters, information on publishers, landing an agent, the list goes on and on. You can also get an online subscription for the Writer’s Market.

Which brings us to your tech friend:

For the Tech Writer:

Maybe she needs some help keeping focused with her writing? You could get her…

  • Scrivener: It’s a system that helps you organize all of your writer’s references, ideas that could lead to that finished novel.
  • Livescribe3: This is brilliant. At the moment, it’s just for iPad/iPod, but when your friend is furiously scribbling on his/her pad, the words will transcribe to the device through the magic of a Bluetooth connection.
  • Write or Die: This little mean bit of software can either be used for free, or downloaded for a cost. It has three different settings where basically you are alerted that you’ve taken too much time stalling in your writing. The easy setting will just flash the screen at you. The demonic one will DELETE YOUR WORDS. Now, I haven’t done that one, because I’m pretty sure I would have no copy by the time I was done.

Finally, if you’re broke, and you want to give your writer something special-engineer some quiet time for them to write. Offer some babysitting, to leave the apartment if you’re roommates, to take care of the house and kids for a so many hours per day, or whatever it is that your loved one has complained that this thing has stopped him from finishing that book.

These tips gift ideas are sure to make your writer the happiest scribe of all. If this doesn’t work, you can totally demand a refund for these suggestions. (Yeah, they’re free. See what I did there?)

If you have any suggestions for gifts for writers, leave them in the comments!

Aloha y’all!
